An invitation to the weary

By Adam Curtis

Is this lockdown revealing to you your limitations?

Are you starting to feel tired?

Tired of your own company? Tired of dwelling on your past mistakes? Tired of the monotony of lockdown life? Tired of the same conversations? Tired of your kids?

This may seem like a strange thing to say, but good! Because that means Jesus has an invitation for you:

“Come, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 12:28

The very fact this invitation exists stands as a direct contradiction to the myth of human self-sufficiency. It tells us that God expects us to be tired. And for those who are willing to admit that they are not “mini-gods” this invitation is exceedingly good news.

It is good news because Jesus himself is calling you to come to him. He cares about you. In your weakness and in your limited state. He is not removed, but present with us. He is not cold but filled with compassion.

It is good news because Jesus is the only one who can actually help. What wearies you? If it is the sins of your past, then Jesus offers forgiveness. He will wash you and you will be whiter than snow. If it is present struggles, then Jesus offers wisdom. He knows the way to go and he will show it to you.

Sins and struggles are no problem for Jesus. Wonderfully for those who know that and accept this invitation then what they receive is rest. To be forgiven by Jesus brings rest because your soul is now at peace with God. To be led by Jesus brings rest because the one who leads you is gentle.

Do you feel weary? If yes, then Jesus has an invitation for you. The question now is, will you accept it?
